Rosemary Cater, Ph.D.

Rosemary Cater is a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Associate Professor Filippo Mancia at Columbia University Medical Center. She received her Bachelor of Advanced Science in biochemistry and pharmacology with first-class honors, and her Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Sydney, Australia. During her graduate studies, she worked with Professors Renae Ryan and Robert Vandenberg to understand how small molecules move across the cell membrane. Throughout her Ph.D., Cater was funded by the Australian Postgraduate Award, the John A. Lamberton Research Scholarship and the University of Sydney Alumni Scholarship, and she was awarded several prizes for her written publications and conference presentations. Cater now continues her research in the Mancia Lab at Columbia University Medical Center. She uses structural biology techniques including lipidic cubic phase crystallography and single-particle cryo-electron microscopy to understand fundamental questions related to the transport of lipidic molecules across membranes; her particular focus on how dietary omega-3 fatty acids are transported into the brain will ultimately assist in the delivery of therapeutics to the brain.
