Naama Aviram, Ph.D.

Naama Aviram is a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Professor Luciano Marraffini at Rockefeller University. She received both her M.S. and her Ph.D. from the Department of Molecular Genetics of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. During her doctoral studies under the supervision of Professor Maya Schuldiner, Aviram focused on the cellular machineries responsible for the correct localization of proteins within the eukaryotic cell. She discovered and characterized a novel pathway that targets proteins from their site of synthesis to the endoplasmic reticulum. Her current postdoctoral research focuses on the CRISPR-Cas system, the prokaryotic adaptive immune system. Specifically, she is interested in processes that enable bacteria to acquire immunological memory and wishes to decipher the regulation and selectivity of this phenomenon. Among Aviram’s academic awards and honors are the Israel National Postdoctoral Award for Advancing Women in Science, the Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation Award for outstanding Ph.D. research and the Otto Schwartz Prize for Excellent Studies, Ph.D.
