He received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has held positions at the University of California, Los Angeles, Bell Communications Research, University of California, San Diego, and Microsoft Research. He is a past winner of the Gödel Prize from the ACM SIGACT and EATCS.
