Alberto Vecchio, Ph.D.

Visiting Scholar, Gravitational Wave Astronomy, CCA, Flatiron Institute

Alberto Vecchio is Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Birmingham (UK) and founding Director of the Institute for Gravitational Wave Astronomy. He received a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the Universita’ di Milano (Italy) and held post-doctoral positions at Cardiff University and the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Gravitationsphysik before joining the faculty at Birmingham. His research focuses on gravitational-wave physics, observations across the gravitational-wave spectrum, and instrument development for ground-based laser interferometers. He is a member of the LIGO team that detected gravitational waves in 2015, and of the European Pulsar Timing Array collaboration that recently provided tentative evidence for the observation of ultra-low frequency gravitational waves. He is a Royal Society Wolfson Fellow.
