Matteo Carandini, Ph.D.

Matteo Carandini received an M.S. in mathematics from the University of Rome in 1990 and a Ph.D. in neural science from New York University in 1996. After postdoctoral fellowships at Northwestern University and New York University, he led a laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich from 1998–2002. He then worked at the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute in San Francisco from 2002–2007 and then finally to University College London. There, together with Kenneth Harris, he co-directs the Cortical Processing Laboratory. The aim of this laboratory is to understand the computations performed by neuronal populations in the visual system, the underlying neural circuits and the way these computations lead to perceptual decisions. Current research efforts focus on how cortical populations integrate sensory information with information from within the brain. Carandini holds the GlaxoSmithKline/Fight for Sight Chair in Visual Neuroscience. He is a McKnight Scholar, European Research Council Advanced Investigator, Burroughs Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator and Simons Investigator.
