Simons Foundation Joins Leading Tech Organizations in Launching the AI Alliance
Rapid advancements in and accessibility to Artificial Intelligence are swiftly leading to a technological revolution that will change how we work, live, learn and interact with one another. Open and transparent AI innovation is essential to empower all kinds of researchers, builders, and AI adopters with the information and tools needed to harness these new opportunities in ways that will prioritize safety, diversity, economic opportunity and benefit to all.
This is why today, the Simons Foundation joins more than 50 leading organizations across industry, startups, academia, research and government to launch the AI Alliance to support open science and open innovation in AI.
While there are currently many individual companies, startups, researchers, governments and others committed to open science and open technologies and are keen to participate in the new wave of AI innovation, more collaboration and information sharing will help the community innovate faster and more inclusively and identify specific risks and mitigate those risks before putting a product into the world.
The AI Alliance is action-oriented and decidedly international, designed to create opportunities everywhere through a diverse group of institutions that can shape the evolution of AI in ways that better reflect the needs and complexity of our societies.
“The Simons Foundation is strongly committed to open codes, open data and open scientific literature,” says Simons Foundation president David Spergel. “We have been long supporters of the arXiv, a key site for open science. We see this support of open-source code for AI as essential for both advancing the science and enabling ethical use of AI.”
The Simons Foundation has been a leader in leveraging AI to learn more about the universe we inhabit. Researchers at the foundation’s in-house research division, the Flatiron Institute, are using AI in various applications, including studying the nature of dark matter, uncovering the inner workings of the brain and predicting the behavior of quantum materials.
The AI Alliance is also focused on fostering an open community of developers and researchers to accelerate responsible innovation in AI while ensuring scientific rigor, trust, safety, security, diversity and economic competitiveness. By bringing together leading developers, scientists, academic institutions, companies and other innovators, the AI Alliance will pool resources and knowledge to address safety concerns while providing a platform for sharing and developing solutions that fit the needs of researchers, developers and adopters around the world.
