Four Scientists Named 2017 Simons Early Career Investigators in Marine Microbial Ecology and Evolution

The Simons Foundation has named four scientists as 2017 Simons Early Career Investigators in Marine Microbial Ecology and Evolution. The three-year awards are intended to help launch the careers of outstanding investigators in this area. The awardees are:

• Andrew Barton of the University of California, San Diego (Scripps Institution of Oceanography), who will explore how environmental and ecological processes shape marine microbial morphology.
• Erin Bertrand of Dalhousie University, who will study the effect of temperature on micronutrient demand of marine microbes.
• Anne Dekas of Stanford University, who will quantify microbial activity in the deep sea using NanoSIMS.
• Naomi M. Levine of the University of Southern California, who will address the role of marine microbial phenotypic plasticity in evolution and biogeochemistry.
